While towing a small trailer and backing up, I deactivated the parking assistance system, and suddenly the infotainment screen blacked out. No backup camera available. The screen came back after 5 minutes. The vehicle has already been in a recall previously for the same problem.

No, it is not my story. It is a complaint of a 2025 Nissan Frontier owner posted on August 30, 2025, by the NHTSA. In the complaint, the owner talked about a recall that includes the 2025 Frontier, which is true.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Nissan recalled over 79,000 Frontier and Kicks because the Center Information Display unit may display a blank screen when shifted into reverse, reducing the driver’s view of what is behind, increasing the risk of a crash.

It causes the vehicles not to comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard. To fix the issue, Nissan has advised dealers to update the software on the vehicle’s Center Information Display, free of charge.

What Caused the Nissan Kicks and Frontier Recall?

In the affected Nissan Frontier and Kicks vehicles, the center information display unit may display a blank screen when shifted into reverse

In the affected vehicles, the Center Information Display unit may display a blank screen when shifted into reverse, causing the recall. If a rearview image does not display, it can reduce the driver’s view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of an accident or injury.

Initial Investigation and Testing

According to the recall report submitted on May 15, 2025, it all began on October 22, 2024, when Nissan received a field report alleging the Center Information Display screen of a 2025 Nissan Kicks vehicle showed a blank screen.

At that time, technicians replaced the display assembly and collected the affected part for further analysis. From October 2024 to November 2024, Nissan, with the supplier, conducted various tests on the affected part.

The tests concluded that the rearview image was not displayed on the screen after putting the vehicle in reverse. Additionally, the camera did not display the around-view monitor image.

From December 2024 to January 2025, the automaker received two additional field reports alleging the Center Information Display unit in the 2025 Nissan Kicks and Frontier was displaying a blank screen.

Nissan collected the affected parts for analysis, and it was concluded that an intermittent communication error could exist between the in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) system and the Center Information Display Modules.

The automaker evaluated the error and worked to develop software to address the issue. In April 2025, Nissan again identified the blank screen problem in specific Japanese models. On May 8, 2025, Nissan finally decided to conduct a recall for affected vehicles.

Why Does the Center Information Display Unit Display a Blank Screen?

According to the recall report, the issue stems from a software logic error within the Center Information Display, which can lead to a communication error with the in-vehicle infotainment module, as discussed before.

It ultimately results in the rearview monitor displaying a blank screen when the vehicle is put into reverse.

However, there are several other reasons behind the issue, including a blown fuse, a malfunctioning display module, loose or damaged wiring, and software glitches.

Has Nissan Reported Any Accidents or Injuries Due to the Issue?

Fortunately, there have been no accidents or injuries reported by Nissan due to the malfunctioning center information display unit.

What Should Owners of the Affected Nissan Models Do?

According to the NHTSA, owners of the affected Nissan Frontier and Kicks vehicles should contact authorized dealers to get the software of the Center Information Display updated, free of charge.

The software update will reprogram the Center Information Display. If the dealer fails or is unable to make necessary repairs, you may contact the National Consumer Affairs Department for Nissan North America at 1-800-867-7669.

Owners will receive a notification letter regarding the safety risk, expected to be mailed on July 10, 2025.
