According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Toyota has recalled over 390,000 vehicles due to a software error that may prevent the rearview image from displaying when the vehicle is placed in reverse.

If the rearview image is not displayed, the vehicle may fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111, “Rear Visibility,” and there may be an increased risk of a crash.

The recall affects certain 2022-2025 Tundra, Tundra Hybrid, and 2023-2025 Sequoia Hybrid vehicles. To fix the issue, Toyota dealers will update the multimedia display software, free of charge.

  • Toyota Tundra produced between November 02, 2021, and July 21, 2025: 220,855 vehicles
  • Toyota Tundra Hybrid produced between March 15, 2022, and July 25, 2025: 105,005 vehicles
  • Toyota Sequoia Hybrid produced between August 31, 2022, and July 29, 2025: 67,978 vehicles

What Caused the Recall?

According to the recall report submitted on October 1, 2025, the affected vehicles are equipped with a 14-inch multimedia display that shows the rearview camera image using four lanes of camera serial data synchronized by counters. When the camera view changes, an unexpected noise on the signal may cause the counters to advance independently.

If the lane counters advance independently, the camera lane data may become unsynchronized. As a result, the display may show a half-green, full-green, or black screen instead of the rearview camera image when the vehicle is in reverse, increasing the risk of a crash.

Toyota’s Step-by-Step Search for the Recall Trigger

In 2022, Toyota received reports alleging that vehicles displayed half-green, full-green, or black screens instead of the rearview image. The automaker requested that the multimedia display supplier duplicate the concern.

From January to April 2025, the supplier conducted testing and revealed that the green screen might be caused by a deviation in the lane counters used for camera synchronization.

The supplier suspected abnormal signal noise when the signal is paused during a camera view change. From May to September 2025, the supplier conducted vehicle and bench-cycle testing using the original software to confirm the estimated cause.

A new version was also designed to prevent the signal pause. On September 25, 2025, Toyota determined that the vehicles affected by the recall contain multimedia display software that may cause the four lanes of the camera serial data to become unsynchronized due to abnormal signal noise during a rearview camera change.

As a result, the display will show a half-green, full-green, or black screen instead of a rearview camera image during a backing event. It ultimately led Toyota to issue a recall.

How Will Toyota Fix the Issue?

Toyota has asked the affected owners to return their vehicles to an authorized dealer. To fix the issue, the dealer will update the multimedia display software at no cost.

In addition to fixing the not-displaying rearview image issue, the software update will also contain various bug fixes, such as:

  • Optimizing backup image display time.
  • Reducing unnecessary prompts in the user interface.
  • Improving the reliability of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.

Toyota will continue to investigate whether this software issue can impact the image response time performance in an actual vehicle.
